COMING SOON- THE DOCTORS WHO SAVED CHRISTMAS!

dwsxtrailer1

There was no real snow again over the Christmas/New Year holidays, but I knew I had to try and film something, so began the long-awaited stop-motion series. First three are ‘in the can’ as they say, just needing effects/voices music and editing together. I think it’ll be Easter by the time they are all done, but here’s a photo teaser-trailer from the epic prelude to Series 6- entitled The NeoDoctor Adventures!

Time Travelling has never been so much FUN!

COMING IN 2019- THE NEODOCTOR ADVENTURES!

NDA COVER1

Yes, I know there’s only a couple of days till the end of 2018, but I’ve been doing a bit of filming and photography for New things, one of which is another spinoff from Infinite Whoniverses- a stop-motion/puppetry mini-series I’m calling The NeoDoctor Adventures, as it follows the 21st NDr. In the lead up to Series 6.

I wanted to make The Doctors Who Saved Christmas last year, but it didn’t snow, so I have had to create my own Snow planet set- not quite Hoth, but near enough, without any Wampa’s though!

So I will be casting voice actors and Narrator’s over the next couple of weeks and hopefully have a few episodes ready by the end of Jan/start of Feb 19!

GET READY! Here comes The NeoDoctor in her own series!

DOCTOR WHO’S 55TH ANNIVERSARY- PART 3-(3/4)

15 DOCTORS!

Mr. Tiglet's Blog

IW55THDOCTOR WHO’S 55TH ANNIVERSARY- PART 3-(3/4)

Well, it’s a week later than planned, but In true Blue Peter-style, here’s a rant I wrote earlier in the year-

Regeneration 101- the 15 Faces of Doctor Who

“My Successor? It could even be a Woman. There’s no reason why The Doctor should always be a Man”

Tom Baker on his ‘retirement’ from the role of Doctor Who.

(Quoted from Regeneration- The Mystery of Ages. The Time Travellers Guide by Peter Haining. 1987. (1995 edition))

15 drs numbered properly

With the release of Series 11(Season 37), I thought it was about time I updated DRG2TW, with something that’s been annoying me for some time- how everyone has gotten something fundamentally wrong.

Just thought I’d mention that I can do basic mathematics- One bean plus two beans makes three beans. Sounds a bit like Baldrick from Blackadder- one bean plus two beans are some beans!

It seems that…

DOCTOR WHO’S 55TH ANNIVERSARY- Dark Days (1/4)

DDCOVER2

DOCTOR WHO’S 55TH ANNIVERSARY- Dark Days (1/4)

With the 55th Anniversary of the world’s longest running Television Science Fiction series, I thought it was appropriate to do something to mark the occasion- several somethings actually.

So, here I am sharing a story that first appeared in the Fanzine DXC in January 1996- a long time ago in a suburb of Liverpool-not-so-far-away!

This was one of several submissions to the zine and the only one printed. The Degeneration Game and Murder on the Andromeda Express did not get printed, as far as I know. DXC was the enigmatic title given by Archeologist/writer/artist John Gordon Swogger. The second issue had contained the awesome Lord of the Rings pastische AND IN THE DARKNESS BIND THEM with Davros as the DarkLord and Thals/Humans and Draconians asDwarves, Men and Elves.

Since I was doing an Astronomy course at the time, I think I asked about an Intergalactic war story- the result was Dark Days, published in issue 4, January 1996. It began the Epic saga of a Second Vampire War and the Confederation, which developed into an original four-part Space Opera script I’m still trying to get made!

Anyway, here’s the story- hope you enjoy it!

Doc1- Dark Days by Ian Cai Mercer- DXC 1996

I recently found John’s blog, which focuses on his academic work and artistic projects and well worth a read-

Universes Without Doctors- UWD

Universes Without Doctors- UWD

By Ian Cai Mercer

“THE UNIVERSE WITHOUT THE DOCTOR- THERE WILL BE CONSEQUENCES”- MADAME VASHTRA- THE NAME OF THE DOCTOR.

“A Timelord? But they’re forbidden to interfere.” “This one calls himself The Doctor, and does nothing but interfere.”

The Cyber lieutenant and Cyber leader- Earthshock Part 2

“A WORLD WITHOUT THE DOCTOR SCARCE BEARS THINKING ABOUT.”- THE MASTER IN THE FIVE DOCTORS.

WHAT HAS GONE BEFORE-

THERE ARE A NUMBER OF STORIES WHERE THE DOCTOR’S INTERVENTION IS CRITICAL TO THE EVIL BEING STOPPED OR PROBLEM OVERCOME.

BUT WHAT IF HE HAD NOT BEEN THERE? How Different would the outcome be?

It’s a scary thought, but a brilliant premise-

Welcome to a world without the doctor!!!

UWD1

There is a new force in the Multiverse- well, a re-branding really. No longer A World Without The Doctor- It’s time to think bigger- It’s time for UNIVERSES WITHOUT DOCTORS- UWD!

Yes- plural not singular.. More unfriendly, even downright dangerous and scary-hairy, no messing about.

The previous six stories played with the premise well- using TV stories as the Launchpad and seeing what MIGHT have happened without the Doctor’s arrival/interference. ROBOTS OF DEATH became The Robot Revolution, still my favourite of the bunch.

CITY OF DEATH became Saviour of the Jagaroth as Scaroth stopped himself and led a new Jagaroth Empire.

EARTHSHOCK became Aftershock as three Beings vied for dominance in the body of the CyberLeader. ROSE turned into Rose Tyler and the Manniquin Monsters.

THE RUNAWAY BRIDE became Infestation Day and recently THE CURSE OF PELADON and THE DALEKS MASTERPLAN  became The Warriors of Peladon- with the local group of galaxies going up in flames.

It seems apt to change the name of the thread as the 55th Anniversary Season is on (Series 11- or Season 37 if you’re counting from Season 26)

So this Halloween get ready for scary Clown and Sweet droids as THE HAPPINESS PATROL becomes Happiness Will Prevail- originally slated for a year ago, but a few new elements make it even better- including the debut of The Kandy Lady!

Get ready for INFINITE WHONIVERSES- UNIVERSES WITHOUT DOCTORS!

THERE IS NO CONFLICT- RETURN OF THE JEDI’S 35TH ANNIVERSARY

THERE IS NO CONFLICT- RETURN OF THE JEDI’S 35TH ANNIVERSARY- plus thoughts on Aftermath/Resistance and The Mandalorian

ROTJI almost titled this ‘The Redemption of Darth Vader’, as that was the whole point of the Original saga- even including the Prequel Trilogy.

I missed the actual date back in May, so watched it last week, the original version first and then the rereleased ‘special’ edition- I prefer the old music at the end, but it’s still one of the best films I have ever seen- Empire Strikes back narrowly beats it to the top spot, with ET in joint third place with New Hope.

I vaguely recall going to see it in 1983. I was nine and it was on at the old Empire Cinema in Widnes, which is now a car park for the Leisure Centre.

It is an epic conclusion to the original Trilogy- Han is freed, Yoda dies, Luke learns the full truth and the rebellion against the Empire reaches a climatic finale, bringing closure to the saga.

Short helps better than no help at all Chewie”- Han Solo.

Now here’s a revelation- would the strike against the Shield Generator succeeded without the Ewoks? In a word- NO! Gaining their help was a pivotal plot point. Wicket seems like a cute teddy bear, but proves himself against the Scout Trooper, then the rest of the tribe save the rebels from the trap.

“So what I told you was true, from a certain point of view” Obi Wan Kenobi.

Truth- or how we perceive it is a strong theme- Palpatine’s lies and machinations are self- evident, but as Kenobi says, personal perspective does play a large part in figuring out what truth is. Okay, he was justifying not telling what really happened to Anakin Skywalker, meaning Luke was not ready, something Yoda emphasised as well.

“I feel the conflict in you.” “There is no conflict”- Luke and Vader.

Two scenes that stand out are where Luke tells Leia she is his sister and then Luke meeting Vader. Dave Prowse did an amazing thing, right at the end of the scene when Luke walks off saying- “Then my Father is truly dead”. He stands at the rail, hunched a bit and it is just a moment, but yes- there is the conflict right there.

It perfectly sets up the Finale- Palpatine is killing Luke with Force Lightning, Vader hunched over, looking between the two, Luke begging. Then he straightens and picks The Emperor up and throws him over the bridge- Anakin, saved by his Son. Like I said at the start- it’s the Redemption of Anakin Skywalker, ditching the Dark Side. (Maybe that should’ve been the title?)

As I said earlier, it is still one of the best films ever, I prefer the old music at the end- the ‘yubyub’ song, although the added celebrations on Tatooine, Coruscant and Cloud City are great in the Special Edition.

When Disney took over the franchise, the old Expanded Universe timeline was ditched and a blank slate meant New things could be made. The Aftermath trilogy of novels by Chuck Wendig revised what happened after Endor and the rise of the New Republic.

They are not bad. Admiral Sloane isn’t quite Thrawn or Daala or Isard, but she is capable, although Rax is the true manipulator of the Remnant. The criminal nature of the Regime is apparent and there are a few new characters introduced.

There are a number of Interludes peppered throughout the trilogy, showing the wider conflict.

One of the recurring Interludes is on Tatooine, following Lawman Cobb Vanth as he claims some Mandalorian armour. This could lead into-

‘MANDALORIANS’. A live-action series by Jon Favreau. This seems to be like the Underworld/Bounty Hunters ideas that got shelved when Disney took over that I mentioned in the Summer, another freaky coincidence that makes me think The Force is strong in this one! (yeah, he wishes!)

Few things are known, apart from it has the Mandalorians or a group as the protagonists and is set seven years after the Return of the Jedi. This is part of the Force Awakens timeline, the old Expanded universe ditched. It is interesting to note that in the Old EU saga, seven years after ROJ was the Jedi Academy trilogy. It seems to be set on Tatooine, so is it following Vanth?

Perhaps The Mandalorian will also furnish some clues on Rey’s parentage. Did Shmi have a brother or sister? Did she have another child with Lars?

I reckon Rey’s a Kenobi, Obi Wan’s Granddaughter. In the Novel Kenobi, he helps some locals including Anileen Calwell, and there is a hint of romance in there. I think if the Kenobi film goes ahead, that might play out, as twenty years on Tatooine might have led to a few reasons why he became known as crazy old Ben.

Finally Resistance. I watched the First episode and it was okay. Taz is likeable, if a bit clumsy and unsure of himself. The Race is a re-tread of the Podracing scene from Episode 1, but sets up his goal of getting accepted to try and sniff out the First Order spy while gathering a team to help/hinder him.

It is very different from Rebels, not just the animation style, but in characters and story as well. And there’s evena couple of Snaggletooth’s in the background- cool!

2022 will be 45th Anniversary, so maybe we’ll see a few new series- I’m still hoping to see my Storming the Dead or Another Chance, but I’d probably have to make them myself. I’ve had a few more ideas since the summer- Holonews/Heroes of the Rebellion/ The Halo crew and The Dark Order, but that’s in Another galaxy even farther away!

Anyway, that’s it from a Galaxy far, far away. I do need to crack on with a review of Jodie in the TARDIS- which is brilliant, by the way- oops- Spoilers Baby!!

HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD AND POTTER NO MORE???

WARNING- SPOILERS AHEAD!

(If you haven’t read it or seen the play!)

 81yrqrcLhyL__SY355_

I thought that this would be disappointing. I was wrong. When I heard it would be presented in Play format, rather than as a proper novel like the other HP books, I thought it would be a bit of a let-down. Thankfully, I was rather pleasantly surprised by how quickly I read through it.

It’s still a chunky hardback, one of those brick-like books that could come in handy for self-defence maybe, but it launches straight away with a slight re-tweeking of the final chapter from Deathly Hallows.

It is 19 years after the Battle for Hogwarts and the Fall of Voldemort. Hermione is Minister for Magic, Harry the Head of Magical Law Enforcement and Ron has just passed a Driving Test. They’ve all got children of their own now and the focus character is young Albus Severus Potter. He is nothing like his famous Father, resenting that fact, leading to estrangement between Father and Son- AHOY SPOILER ALERT!! (I did warn you!)

Albus befriends loner Scorpius Malfoy and then joins Slytherin House, something Harry has trouble understanding. At the start of their Fourth year (tying-in to Goblet of Fire) Al overhears Harry arguing with Amos Diggory, Cedric’s Father, he decides to steal a Time Turner and save Cedric.

Accompanied by Scorpius and Amos niece Delphi, they go back to the Triwizard Tournament (from HP and the GoF) to save Cedric, but then everything goes horribly wrong.

MAJOR SPOILER ALERT BABY!!!

Both are affected when Reality changes to an Alternate nightmare world where Voldemort and his Augurey reign supreme. Putting everything right again is a harrowing ordeal and all the characters grow as a result.

ALSO- JKR has said she has no plans to continue the story after this, so there won’t be tales of Albus and Scorpius and their adventures, nor of Harry’s Grandchildren- but now she’s said that, I wonder how many people, like me, now have Hogwarts the Next Generation in their heads? The New Adventures of Albus and Scorpius maybe? There is still their fifth/sixth and seventh years at Hogwarts, that’s OWLS and NEWTS. Then there is still the matter of the Elder Wand- Harry has to die undefeated for its power to be truly broken- if he gets Disarmed even once, then the Wand’s allegiance will change, Even though it’s broken in two, it could always get mended.

And it’s not just the main characters; the Wizarding World beyond Hogwarts is such a rich tapestry- Look how she has expanded Fantastic Beasts from a small guide to five films. The Tales of Beadle the Bard was just five stories- that’s a TV spinoff right there. Then there’s A History of Magic- possibly an Anthology series- the Goblin Rebellions/Giant Wars and so on. The Founders of Hogwarts- what did Slytherin do after he made the Chamber of Secrets?

What fascinates me from HP and Order of the Phoenix is the history of the Department of Mysteries and the Unspeakables. That’s the early career of Broderick Bode- killed off in OOP, but mentioned very briefly in GOF- ‘Bagman and Crouch’ page 79-

ARTHUR WEASLEY-‘and that’s Bode and Croaker. They’re Unspeakables, from the Department of Mysteries, top secret, no idea what they get up to.’

Then the Department itself is in OOP- Harry’s Trial and the Final battle and is such a great place- The Veil, brains in jars, Hall of Prophecies, all intriguing and worth exploring.

So there you go JK, so many more stories worth exploring and expanding upon. Not just a thousand years of Hogwarts, but Beyond, Before and Bezoar!

Okay, I added that last one to make three B’s, but there is such a diverse world in the Potterverse, you know it’s not over. I would like, one day, to see a HP Series that keeps in all the stuff the movies missed out- like Dobby in Goblet of Fire- such a travesty leaving him out. For now though, my head is spinning faster than a Portkey, whizzing my imagination off in multiple tangents- I might even be tempted to do a HP/Who crossover for Infinite Whoniverses series 6 next year- better get my Thinking Hat on then hadn’t I?

HARRY POTTER AND THE CURSED CHILD- In hardback (and paperback now!)
