The New Doctor’s got ‘The Look”!

“My Successor? It could even be a Woman. There’s no reason why The Doctor should always be a Man”

Tom Baker on his ‘retirement’ from the role of Doctor Who.

(Quoted from Regeneration- The Mystery of Ages. The Time Travellers Guide by Peter Haining. 1987. (1995 edition))

15th doctor JW

So I have finally posted the video I made shortly after the announcement of Jodie Whittaker being cast as the new Doctor.

I didn’t want to get into the whole argument of whether it’s a good move, but you know it is really, so just accept it.

Anyway, Regeneration 101 will go into the whole mechanics of how a sex-change Regeneration works, and there has been precedent, not just over the last couple of years but in the classic series too. Tom Baker himself said why not, and there’s even been a XenoRegeneration (Species-change) I’m also going to explain why the numbering is wrong and get into that as well, oh joy!

But for now, just enjoy my video and the hints of what’s to come in both Doctor Who and Infinite Whoniverses series 5! (Although, Independence is late by a month, with the FemDr and Elise, so that’s almost ready!)

Nanananaa, she’s got THE LOOK!

Autumn 2015- sort of, because it’s now Winter 2017!

autumn2015I went back to University last year, just on the Open Day to ask if there were any plans to actually print the Autumn 2015 Anthology. Next thing I know, it’s been taken off the website!

Anyway, it’s back online now. I think the funding for a print version fell through which was why it was put online in the first place. Even though the University has its own Publishing House.

My short story ‘A Riot in the Library’ is part of a collection of mainly poetry, and can be found on Pages 57-62. Though I wish I’d have written something better for the biographical section! Though looking back it seems the Editor copied it from one of my CV’s! Oh well, never mind Seamus!

Have to say I didn’t initially like the two-column layout at first, but think it’s grown on me.

Think there might be more life to the adventures of Sammy the Squirrel and Pat the Polar Bear, just have to wait and see won’t we boys and girls?!!

Now it’s just a case of seeing if the University will publish something else in the not-too distant future.

COSDAY 4- My Cosday Will Go On- 300TH VIDEO!

2016 New Year card or background with monkey.Happy New Year. Merry Christmas.
Year of the monkey!

2016 New Year card or background with monkey. Happy New Year. Merry Christmas. Year of the monkey!

Well, this has been a bit different. Tidying, sorting, recycling revising old stories and CV, catching up on stuff, seeing Rogue 1 twice and planning Dr. Rrr Series 2.

In the midst of all that, I have even begun sorting photos and clips from last few hikes and compiled a compilation of the two dozen Comic Cons/Cosplay meets and events from 2016.

It’s been an awesome journey, trying out new things, especially Anime- Attack on Titan etc and learning new things/expanding my Cultural horizons. Chinese New Year was awesome, it’s still the Year of the Monkey, and a right cheeky one it has been!

Recently I’ve become fascinated and even captivated by the concept of Bunraku- Japanese Puppetry, something akin to Thunderbirds-style, indeed Starfleet was an 80’s Bunraku that was even more popular in the West than in Japan- it was a shame a fire destroyed the original puppets though. Thunderbolt Fantasy is a Taiwan-based show and something I’d like to emulate at some point- after Series 2 of Dr. Rrr though!

Anyway, 300 videos. Ever changing-ever learning, My Cosday will go on!

5 REASONS I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO ROGUE 1

star-wars-anthology-rogue-one-ca-310x165

1)The Original Opening Crawl intro-

“IT IS A PERIOD OF CIVIL WAR. REBEL SPACESHIPS, STRIKING FROM A HIDDEN BASE HAVE WON THEIR FIRST VICTORY AGAINST THE EVIL GALACTIC EMPIRE.

DURING THE BATTLE, REBEL SPIES MANAGED TO STEAL SECRET PLANS TO THE EMPIRE’S SECRET WEAPON, THE DEATH STAR, AN ARMOURED SPACE STATION WITH ENOUGH POWER TO DESTROY AN ENTIRE PLANET”

Star wars 1977 original opening crawl text.

So, here it is, 39 years later- the film based on that background text that introduced the very first Star Wars movie, later renamed A New Hope and the Fourth Episode of a projected nine. It’s got a heap of expectations on it though.

2) Hints in other media-

There was a radio play set beforehand and some of the novels had their own interpretation. The Han Solo Trilogy by AC Crispin told of a raid on Toprawa by Bria Tharen and Red Hand Squad. Battlefront 2 on the PS2 had a breakout on the Death Star and plans transmitted to Polis Massa and then the Tantive 4. So this would be the fourth version, since Disney took over and everything written beforehand has been shunted into a parallel universe, giving them a blank slate. (Although Grand Admiral Thrawn is turning up in Rebels series 3, which means they haven’t jettisoned everything like a load of Spice from the spice mines of Kessel then)

3) “That’s no moon, it’s a space station”

Obi Wans ominous recognition of the sheer, err enormity of the problem facing them is played well. The look of horror on his face as the Millennium Falcon approaches the Death Star is priceless- Immense, powerful, the ultimate power in the universe! About time it was revisited, shiny and new!

4) Obi Wan’s Narration over The First Trailer-

“For a thousand Generations the Jedi were the Guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the Dark Times, before The Empire.”

As a Tie Fighter soars over a jungle, the outline of the Death Star is seen for the first time- an iconic image and one that sent a shiver up my spine! The trailers since then have built upon that, as well as giving more tantalising glimpses into the characters (and ships/vehicles- the AT-AT’s are back!)

5) There’s more to come!

If I was going to be cynical, then I’d say since taking over the franchise, Disney has upped its marketing and merchandising, milking the SW cashcow for all it’s worth.

Well, I won’t. Like I stated earlier, Lucasfilm has created a blank slate between Return of the Jedi and The New Trilogy. Rebels has been pretty good. The Live-action series has yet to materialise, but a number of spin-off/stand alone films has been announced. Boba Fett, Han Solo and even Yoda are getting their own films, but I’d love to see some of the Beings from the Cantina get their own film- Muftak the Talz or a Snaggletooth movie! Yeah, that could work- explore the difference between the tall blue snaggletooth’s and the smaller red ones! Maybe the red support the Empire and the rarer blues the Rebellion maybe?

Come on Lucasfilm, get it done!

Events- FOR THE LOVE OF SCI-FI COSPLAY SHOOT

15107379_10209735684622581_4515850338791953191_n-copyIt’s been a yet another manic Sunday as I headed off on an epic journey to Trafford Park in Manchester for the inaugural FOR THE LOVE OF SCI-FI weekend at Bowlers Exhibition Centre.

A bit further out of my way than usual with a stroll near the Bridgewater canal along a stretch I didn’t do in my epic hike two years ago from Runcorn to Manchester, but it was a very nice day, if a bit on the chilly side of the Force (but not Hoth-cold, if you get what I mean!)

From just-after sunrise to just-before sunset I got 360 pictures and video footage. Going through that was epic enough, cutting 45 and looking at what could make it into a video. Here’s a taster- something that’s not your average Cosplay Contest- there wasn’t one, but an epic Star Wars themed shoot as Uncle George corralled as many Cosplayers as possible into a corner. I immediately found the best vantage point, practically invading the stage, but the results were well-worth the effort.

I also noticed it was a bit Christmassy- several Leia’s and Han’s, Eight Stormtroopers, Six Jawas, a few Bounty Hunters, Three Imperial Royal Guards, Two Tie Fighter Pilots and Scout Troopers, One Wookie/Moff Tarkin/Darth Vader/Darth Maul/Lando and an R2D2 rolling up late! (But not in a Pear tree it has to be said!)

So just need to edit/process the pictures and make a video- no pressure there then! Think it’ll be later in the week, still haven’t finished sorting Wholock photos from LAST weekend- oops, better get my skates on like Yuri then!

Thanks to George for directing the Troops!

Thanks to Delroy, Camille and all the Cosplayers!

Thanks to the Andy and the Organisers for putting on an AWESOME event!

700th Blogpost- Events- Rozanne Bell Exhibition @Unicorn Gallery, Widnes

030It can be interesting sometimes when you pass by places on the bus or train and something reaches out and grabs your attention by the jugular.

A sign on the window of Unicorn Gallery said ‘Meet celebrated artist Rozanne Bell’. Since I hadn’t the foggiest who she was, I googled her, found her website and was amazed by the quality and scope of her artwork.

Greeted enthusiastically by her dog Hector and a glass of mulled wine, I stepped out of my comfort zone and into a whole other universe- Fine Art, very fine indeed as I examined a couple of paintings. The Meadows one stood out.

I asked Rozanne about a couple of details, mainly her use of glitter, as it tends to get everywhere when I use it, but in her pictures, it is very fine and expertly applied. She said she sprays it on, but if I tried that, I’d probably get it in my hair and everywhere but the picture! The Meadow full of flowers was intrically woven together, as with all her paintings, a mixture of layered images, made up of glitter, resin, oils, inks, gessos, gold and silver leaf, all vibrantly mixed and organised in an iconic and unique way. So unique that each painting is slightly varied, maybe in colour or slight change of detail, but no two are exactly the same.

033

Her other works on show include Wildflower Beach, Bejewelled skies over windmill, Red lane and many other pieces. I have to say I really like Starry night with its full, yellow/orange moon over the bay. The moons in her pictures are much more impressive than the so-called Super moons I’ve seen recently, but that’s just me!

Looking around the Gallery, I saw some other interesting pieces by artists like Steven Scholes, Paul Ehlen, Joan Puerto and Gisela Ueberall, particularly upstairs. Rozanne Bell’s Exhibition is still on for another week until the 26th November. Prices range from £515- £1295.

An interesting glimpse into a versatile and very imaginative Artist. Rozanne is off to Tavistock Picture Framing Galleries in Devon next week with New York and several other prints.

Unicorn Gallery, Widnes is open 9AM-5PM (Closed Sunday and Thursday)-

AN EPIC JOURNEY- Two Years later

Sometimes things do not go as you would expect them to, life has a way of throwing a curveball every now and again.

The journey of bringing the EPIC! Anthology to publication is one such tale.

epic 4

So began the intro to my First ever Anthology Publication back in 2014. So, two years later, how is it going?? Well, not that well I think. I haven’t checked Amazon or the Facebook page to see how it’s going, so that’s something to do. I think it’s been a bit quiet because a few of the same Writers submitted stories for a semi-sequel ‘Courage’ which should have been published last year, but as far as I know has not materialised yet. Weirdly enough, my story- The Last Christmas of Planet Earth, featured an Alien Invasion of Liverpool with Alien Clowns, a bit disturbing with all the nonsense of idiots dressed up trying to scare people, though in one case it backfired when one got hit with a bottle- very disturbing indeed.

I’ve had a look and even though Omni reboot took down By the Lights of the Silvery Moons (because their Archives only last a year!) the other stories are still available to read and download.

So, here’s to EPIC! The Anthology-
