Orders from Berlin by Simon Tolkien

orders-from-berlinFor the Grandson of JRR Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings, this isn’t what I would expect.

While Christopher Tolkien has edited and expanded his Father’s works, Simon has gone in the opposite direction and created a Detective series.

It is very surprising, a tautly-written thriller set in the 1940’s in the middle of the Blitz, an origin story for Detective Trave, as earlier books have been set in the 1960’s.

This is his first case- a conspiracy to assassinate Churchill by Hitler and his Agent. While the identity of Agent D isn’t hard to guess, the deftly-plotted dramatic pace of the story whisks you along, weaving its way to an explosive conclusion. All the characters contribute and are well-written, from Quaid to Trave, Ava and even Hitler and Churchill, it is an intricate tapestry showing the heroism in Wartime Britain.

As for me, I’m having a go at the other four novels. The King of Diamonds is also proving to be another fine story for Detective Trave.
